BOOKS
Since the beginning of the 1990’ies I have used my education as a journalist to write about design, architecture and innovation. That I have done for both Danish newspapers and trade magazines, and books not to forget.
I have written for papers like ‘Politiken’, ‘Information’ and ‘Weekendavisen’. Furthermore, I have been chief editor for the Swedish/Danish magazine ‘RUM’ and co-editor of the Danish Designers journal ‘Rum & Form’. Hereunder you can also see the books I have written since 2002. Those that are not sold out from the publisher can be bought by writing to me at thomas@dicksondesign.dk

Designeren Arne Jacobsen | Gyldendal, 2023
This book I have written together with my colleague Henrik Lund-Larsen. It reveals new insights into the world of Arne Jacobsen, both professionally and privately. Furthermore, we have included many new photos of his extensive gallery of furniture, lamps, textiles and other designs – some even quite unknown today. The book got fine reviews in the Danish press. Price: 375 Danish kr.
NEW: The Jacobsen book is being translated into English and will be released by the publishing house Prestel sometime in late summer or the early fall of 2025.

Danish Ceramic Architecture | Arvinius + Orfeus, Stockholm 2023
This book is only available in English. In this project I have been part writer and part editor – in close collaboration with the main author, the architect Rune Bundgaard. This book does not deal with traditional brick buildings, but instead it describes an abundance of buildings which are clad in some sort of ceramics, e.g. glazed tiles. The examples in the book are all designed by Danish architects, like The Opera House in Sydney and Arne Jacobsens modernist gas station in Klampenborg. This book can be bought at Internet book stores like Amazon, or from the publisher: ao-publishing.com.

Om at opleve design | Gyldendal, 2020
The Danish title means: ‘Experiencing Design’ and the inspiration to write this book came from Steen Eiler Rasmussens ’Experiencing Architecture’ which he wrote in the middle of the 1950’ies. It has been a standard reader at many architecture schools around the world ever since. I’ve always loved this book and have tried to do something similar, but about design. It focuses on how one can understand the qualities of design and the elements that goes into making good design. Why do some designs fascinate us while others leave most of us untouched? Generously illustrated.
Price: 275 kr.

Rodfæstet – Møbelhåndværk fra Rud. Rasmussens Snedkerier |
RR Forlag, 2020
The Danish title reads: ‘Well Rooted – Furniture Craftsmanship from The Rud. Rasmussen Workshops’. Together with the last owner of the company, Jørgen Rud Rasmussen, I wrote this story about one of Denmark’s best furniture companies in the 20th century. Here, most of Kaare Klint’s and Mogens Koch’s furniture was produced. We wrote the book a few years after the company was sold and the workshop in Copenhagen closed.
Price: 300 kr.

Dansk design | Gyldendal 2017
This is an updated and expanded version of the book (with the same title) that was published in 2006. A real coffee-table book consisting of 670 pages in a very large format. It describes Danish design from ancient times up till now and also covering all design fields, from furniture and products to fashion and graphic design + a lot more. Written by a professional designer with a deep insight into the practice of the design fields. Got lots of great reviews.
Price: 375 kr.

Rum til det gode liv | Nyt Nordisk Forlag (now Gyldendal) 2015
The Danish title means ‘Space for the Good Life’. A very different book on interior design. It emphasizes the needs of people and families instead of trends and flashy tricks. The book introduces the reader to some basic design methods that everybody can use. Also, there is a lot of background material on rooms, light, colors and furnishing. Extravagantly illustrated with plan drawings and photos. Received very fine reviews and is still sought after on the second-hand market, but unfortunately sold out from the publisher.

Bank af sin tid / Bank of the Future | Arvinius & Orfeus, Stockholm 2014
Available in both Swedish and English. A portrait of Swedbank’s new HQ in Stockholm that was designed by the Danish architectural office 3XN. The book describes the intentions behind the novel plan solution, that particularly aims to bring different groups of employees together. Before this big building was built the employees were sitting at various locations in the Stockholm area. Also details like furnishing and the use of art is included in this book. Can be obtained through the publisher: ao-publishing.com

Dansk design – English Edition / Gyldendal and Murdoch Books, 2008
Two years after the book Dansk Design was launched in Danish it came out in an English translation. It was in a collaboration between the Danish publisher Gyldendal and Australian/British Murdoch Books. Both versions have been sold out for a long time.

Dansk design | Gyldendal, 2006
The reference work on Danish design. Including all types of design from prehistoric ages and up till today. The book became a bestseller and also received great reviews in the press. 570 pages in a large format. Written as a research project at The School of Architecture in Aarhus. This version of the book is sold out from Gyldendal, but was relaunched in an updated and expanded version in 2017.

Design og ledelse | Danish Design Centre, 2004
The Danish title means ‘Design and management”. Written in collaboration with associate professor at Copenhagen Business School Tore Kristensen. A relatively small book on how to use design in companies and organizations. Here we introduced the concept of strategic design to a wider audience in Denmark. In this book we especially distinguish between design as a planning tool and design as formgiving. Sold out a long time ago.

Designforskning – en international oversigt | The School of Architecture in Aarhus, 2002
The title means ‘Design Research – an International Survey’. It began with a quite modest 8-month long research project at The School of Architecture in Aarhus and was an attempt to map out what was going on in design research around the world. It ended up being a quite large report that the school in Aarhus published as a book. About a year later the government gave money to design research so maybe it was good that this book saw life. Sold out.
